Call for applications for a doctoral scholarship in Amman (Jordan)

As part of the research project “Historicity of democracy in the Arab world ” (HISDEMAB) coordinated by Dr. habil. Nora Lafi and based at Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in Berlin (Germany ), which brings together German, French, Jordanian and Tunisian research teams financed by the Leibniz Collaborative Excellence initiative, a doctoral scholarship position is now available for the Jordan-based project team at IFPO Amman. Candidates must be enrolled in doctoral studies at a University in Jordan or enroll at the beginning of the scholarship and will devote their research to a local or regional aspect of the research programme. 

 

The successful candidate will benefit from research stays in Berlin, which will be financed by the HISDEMAB programme. They will actively participate in the collective activities of the scientific network (internal meetings, colloquia, seminars, publications).

The profile sought is that of a doctoral student at the start of his/her dissertation, working on the theme of the historicity of democracy in the Middle East from a historical, sociological, anthropological or political science perspective. Particular attention will be paid to applications showing a good knowledge of the local and international bibliography on the subject, related to an original field of research and articulating in an innovative way problematized questions and reflections contributing to collective research. The general aim of the programme is to reinterpret local deliberative practices in the Arab world which can constitute the historical matrices of a vision of democracy, and to examine their transformation during the various phases of Ottoman, colonial, national and contemporary history. Attention will also be devoted to studying the impact of local deliberative practices on the global ideologies that have transformed, reinterpreted or challenged them.

Excellent language skills in Arabic and English are required. Knowledge of German or French is valued.

Information on the doctoral scholarship:

  • Duration of funding: 36 months
  • Place of Work: IFPO Amman
  • Monthly grant: 750 euro
  • Deadline for submitting the application: 31 August 2020

The scholarship runs from 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2023, subject to review and confirmation.
The scholarship includes health insurance. Additional funds for research travel and publications are available. The programme will significantly participate in the payment of registrations fees in one of the Jordanian Universities.

The application must include the following documents:

1- Certificate of enrolment in doctoral studies at a university in Jordan.
2- CV of the candidate (university course, civic activities)
3- Certified true copies of the masters certificate and other university diplomas
4- Letter of motivation and research project (5 pages with general presentation, hypotheses and objectives of the thesis, method, sources, bibliography, progress report, sample of the documentation on which the research is based, 36-month work plan until the defence of the thesis and including the submission of a chapter in a collective work published within the framework of the programme) highlighting the points of convergence between the thesis and the collective programme.
5- Letter of recommendation from the supervisor of the thesis.
6- Letter of recommendation from a second professor whose research area is related to the subject of the thesis.
7- An example of academic writing (a chapter of the masters thesis, the doctoral project as validated, an academic article if applicable) (all languages accepted).

ZMO is an interdisciplinary research centre with interests in the history, cultures and dynamics of societies in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. It pays particular attention to the social and political dynamics of societies in the South and to North-South issues, more particularly the mutual influences between Muslim societies and their neighbours. The centre hosts around forty researchers including historians, anthropologists, and religious studies experts.
